Happiness 100% – My trek to Ranipuram

The mountain layers

The north of Kerala is fairly unexplored. It is home to some pristine hills. I went for an organized trek to the hills of Ranipuram, in the district of Kasargod. It was my first time to the Kerala beyond Kozhikode.

Kanhangad Railway Station
We got down at Kanhangad railway station. Ranipuram is about one and half hours from there by bus.

Dosa in North Kerala
Dosa in North Kerala is made only with Ari (Rice) unlike the ones in south with Ari and uzhunnu and uluva, (rice and pulses)

We were a group of thirty-two. I was skeptical about going with a large group at first.  Large groups, I thought, always created chaos. But, I was amazed by how every one of us gelled so quickly.  Maybe it was the nature vibes or just the magic of the place that brought us together.  Almost everybody knew everyone’s name. People who just knew each other for like two hours of time were making fun of each other.

Pitching tents
Learned to pitch a tent and pack it back and also stayed in one for the first time! The tents are usually pitched in the daylight, before the trek- it gets dark and windy afterward and becomes difficult to set up.

And finally the people who delivered this 100% happiness - the people who organised the trek - Jimmy Jose and Aswathy chechi.

My biggest take away from this trip was how I was exposed to so many newnesses – whether it’s people or nature.

To be amazed by new people – pick their brains – understand their perspective of life and learn new things from them. Or to treat my eyes with some beauty – to see white leaves for the first time and even a flower shaped like a butterfly! (didn’t get a good picture)

To put it in the words of the photographer, Steve McCurry – ” The thing which inspires me the most is just traveling observing and wandering around the amazing planet we are on.”
